
Can you imagine a person without any emotions at all? That is difficult because we go through a whole gamut of emotions in a day. These can range from anger, joy, sadness, love, happiness, fear, depression, hope, and anxiety. We can do a lot or a little to control these emotions and if we are successful, then we have emotional stability.
In the workplace we can see evidence of emotional stability or the lack of it in observing colleagues. The more stable colleagues will exhibit less anxiety and will be able to cope with stress much better and seem to have a built in shield to do so. At the other end of the scale, the more anxious and worried types are more liable to be upset and can not cope with pressure at all.
Not feeling emotionally stable plays a key role in personal relationships as well and the lack of such stability can also be the cause of a break up or divorce. We all seek stability in one way or another and it is when we cannot control our emotions that unpleasant consequences result and relations are damaged at home and indeed in the workplace.
Let us look at a moment at anger, rage, fear, panic, anxiety and hate. All these negative emotions have to be kept under control. The child can lash out and become violent or just kick and scream but the adult who is not feeling emotionally stable is not permitted such luxury!
If we reach emotional stability it means that our emotions are under control but it does NOT mean that we do not experience some intense pleasure like love, joy, contentment and self confidence.
The key then is to have enough positive emotions so that we can keep negative thoughts under control. With depressed patients, negative thoughts and feelings are getting the upper hand and that is not a good situation to be in.
If we are depressed or lack emotional stability we may feel the need to seek help. There are many types of help available if we are not feeling emotionally stable.
