thai food queens

Today’s reading will be a little longer then ususal so please bare with me…it’s worth your time! I would like you to compare two stories and tell me what the similarities are between them.

Let me begging with the story of my morning (yes, literally this morning). Of course, it all began with my wife and I waking up finding our boy in between both of us (even thought we told him not to come in before sunlight). Boys will be boys!  Then our twin girls finally joined in…and like every morning all five of us found ourselves united in bed. A queen size feels like a double when this many people are in.  So it didn’t much time before we were up and around.

For some reason, I lost track of time. So yes, I was late for work.  I quickly said my daily goodbyes and left in a rush.  Since I didn’t have time for breakfast I stopped at Tim Horton’s (since there’s one at every corner), and got myself a extra large double-double (for those that are not familiar with the term it stands for two cream two sugars), a cherry cheese danish (my absolute favourite), and a double chocolate donut (yah, yah, I know…watch the weight!) As I was heading out (now ever later since Tim Horton’s drive-through took for ever) there was a man hitch-hiking. Usually I never stop for a hitch-hiker but for some reason, the phrase “what would Jesus do†popped in my head and without thinking further I slammed on the brakes.

We introduced ourselves (I think his name was Kevin) and headed out.  As we talked, Kevin told me his story about sleeping in and missing his ride, and I told him where I worked.  It was a very pleasant conversation. Then I asked him where he was heading…it would have been too easy for him to say near me, so instead he told me somewhere out of my way.  But again, in my mind, I had a feeling of “be at peace and get him to where ever he needs to goâ€.

As I was driving, yet another message popped in my mind saying “offer him foodâ€â€¦and so I did…and so he accepted…and so he took my CHERRY DANISH! Noooooooooooo!  As I dropped him off and as he took the last bite of that succulent cherry danish, he said very clearly, thank you so much and God Bless you! And the last though of that moment for me was…that what Jesus would have done…that’s what Jesus was telling me to do!

The second story is about two missionaries that have come to our new Church http://kingsvalley.ca/ to speak about their past and future mission trips to Thailand.  Like many mission speeches heard before, I was expecting to hear about what they do, how much money they need, and how much they need our support.  Instead, I heard a compassionate history lesson.  Did you know that 95% of the Thai population are Buddhists, 3% are Muslims, and under 1% are Christians? They went on to emphasise that 99% of the Thai population are in the dark without God…that brought tears to my eyes.

The male speaker then shared a story that has marked me forever. He shared how one day (somewhere in Thailand…I just can’t recall the town) he was walking back to where he was staying (about two blocks) from where he was and in that two blocks, was approached by numerous brothels.  One man in particular stopped him and opened a book pointing to woman in the pictures saying…come in…come in!  As he said no thanks, the man flipped pages and then caught up to him to point at teenage boys saying…come in…come in.  Disturbed by this, he said no more forcefully and started walking again. The man flipped yet some pages of his book and rushed to him pointing at infants no older then 3 or 4 years of age and then said…come in…come in!

What do you say to that?  You can imagine that my tears not only on my face but in my heart.

So what does those two stories have in common?

1 John 2:3 Read: And how can we be sure that we belong to him? By obeying his commandments. If someone say, “I belong to God,†but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and does not live in the truth. But those who obey God’s word really do love him. That is the way to know whether or not we live in him, those who say they live in God should live their lives as Christ did.

Today, tomorrow, and each time you are in a difficult situation, or someone asks your help when you don’t have time, or you are asked to put another person ahead of yourself, ask yourself “what would Jesus do?â€

God Bless,

vigceo
